Let’s face it.
If your oven isn’t working properly, you can’t cook that amazing dinner for your family.
You will need to fix your oven as soon as possible once it breaks down, which begs the question…
Is it worth getting it fixed?
This is exactly what we will answer in this post.
Let’s begin.
How long should my oven last?
To start off this blog, we would like to answer a very common question…
How long should my oven last?
As an appliance repair service provider, we find that ovens typically last the longest out of any other large white-goods appliance.
You can expect your oven to last between 10 and 15 years, however, if you have chosen a high-quality brand and model, which you maintain properly – this can very easily be pushed to 20 and 25 years.
Now… you all came to this post for the same reason – to find the costs associated with an oven repair.
Let’s not delay any further and get into that.
Common Oven Problems & Their Costs
Even though every oven is different in terms of quality and external design, they all face the same problems.
The most common problems we find homeowners struggling with are…
- Heating Problems
- Fuse Box Tripping
- Igniter Malfunctions (On Gas Ovens)
- Oven Receives No Power
- Noisy Fan
1. Heating Problems
If your oven is not heating, it often stems from a faulty heating element.
Once your heating element fails, replacing it is typically quite affordable.
On average, you can expect to pay between £10 and £30 for the part and an additional £50 to £100 for any labour provided by your chosen appliance repair specialist.
Please note that some ovens use heating elements which are specifically designed for that specific brand or model.
In such a case, the part fee to replace the heating element will be higher.
2. Fuse Box Tripping
If you find that your oven trips the fuse box when in use, it can be an extremely difficult problem to resolve and or a very simple one.
Unfortunately, we cannot give you an accurate price range to resolve such a problem as when your oven trips the fuse box it can stem from a lot of areas.
For example, it can be a fault with your heating element, the wiring within the appliance, the wiring within the property, the socket, the oven’s plug as well as a dozen other things.
For this type of problem, we recommend having a professional come out and diagnose your appliance.
The average fee for an oven diagnostic is between £30 and £60.
Once your oven is diagnosed, you will know what the fault is and the provider will give you the exact cost to fix the issue.
3. Igniter Malfunctions (On Gas Ovens)
When a fault develops with any gas appliance, we always recommend having a professional come over and fix it instead of trying to DIY the repair.
At the end of the day – your safety is at stake.
If your oven has igniter problems, please have a professional over to diagnose the issue.
Once again, you can expect to pay between £30 and £60 for the initial diagnostic, then an additional £50 to £100 for any further labour or parts.
4. Oven Receives No Power
If your oven is not starting at all, it’s most commonly a problem with the socket and or plug.
Other times, it can be more complicated where your control board has failed.
Similar to point 2 in this post, we would recommend contacting a professional and having your appliance diagnosed as this problem can stem from a lot of different areas.
As previously mentioned, the diagnostic might cost you between £30 and £60.
5. Noisy Fan
If you can hear weird noises coming from your oven when in use, it’s most likely your fan that’s causing the problem.
Typically, the fan motor just needs to be re-positioned correctly, other times, it may require replacement.
If the fan motor needs to be replaced, it will cost you between £20 and £60 for the part.
In terms of diagnostic fees, installation costs or call-outs, you may be looking at a further £50 to £100.
On the other hand, if the fan can be fixed without replacing it, you should be looking at a fee of under £100 including everything such as the initial diagnostic, call-out fees, labour and taxes.
So... Should You Repair or Replace?
When it comes to appliance repairs, many people don’t know that regardless of the problem, the price to fix the appliance remains more or less the same.
You will always be paying between £50 and £100 for the provider’s labour and you might be paying up to a further £100 for any spare parts that are needed.
The more complicated the problem, the more parts that may be needed and therefore, the higher the costs.
Most oven repairs, including everything, have an average cost of £150.
Now… finally, should you repair or replace your oven?
We would only recommend replacing your oven if the potential repair costs exceed half of the appliance’s value when new.
For example, if the potential cost of fixing your oven is £200 and your oven was only £300 when new – it would not be worth fixing.
